PIVOTAL ON THE MOVE!
Pivotal on the Move is the next chapter in our story.
Pivotal changes the lives of foster youth in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, starting in high school all the way through college graduation and into the workforce. When trying to plan for what comes next, we know the most important thing is for us to listen to our scholars and understand what they need from us.
What we’ve heard from our students is that they need consistent and uninterrupted support, they need it to start earlier, and they need help removing the systemic barriers that prevent them from succeeding.
MOVING ACROSS COUNTY LINES
Young people in foster care change schools an average of 8 times while in care! This constant upheaval can wreak havoc on a student’s academic progress. Pivotal will continue to provide services when students move out of county to give them consistent support and keep them on track to succeed. We are already serving post-secondary students in 24 counties in California and 13 states nationwide, providing scholarships, tutoring, professional development workshops, internships, and 1:1 coaching. The Pivotal on the Move initiative will expand the counties we serve and allow us to follow students through different placements to help provide some consistency among the chaos.
MOVING INTO MIDDLE SCHOOL
In the past, we worked with young people from foster care starting in the 9th grade but we know that starting earlier can help ease the transition into high school. By the time they get to high school, some students are already too far behind to achieve an on-time graduation. Starting our work in middle school means we can help more of our young people graduate high school in four years.
MOVING INTO POLICY AND ADVOCACY
In addition to this geographic and age expansion, we are also committing more resources to legislative and advocacy work. We want to provide our students a voice in the government and on legislative decisions that have a direct impact on their lives.
