Pivotal is proud to welcome our latest cohort of Master of Social Work (MSW) interns who are joining our Coaching team to support scholars as they navigate college, career exploration, and life after foster care. While each intern brings a unique background and perspective, they share a common passion for helping young people achieve their goals.
From former scholars returning to give back, to future social workers inspired by personal experiences and a commitment to equity, this cohort represents the next generation of changemakers dedicated to supporting youth and young adults. Daniela Navarro
Currently in the second year of the Extended MSW program at California State University, East Bay, Daniela was drawn to social work through her passion for supporting children, youth, families, and underrepresented communities. Her background in Sociology and Child and Adolescent Development deepened her understanding of systemic barriers and strengthened her commitment to advocacy and equity.
At Pivotal, Daniela is excited to continue growing as a social worker while helping scholars navigate challenges and pursue their goals.
"The impact I hope to make is to be someone who listens, advocates, and reminds others that they don't have to navigate life's challenges alone. I want to continue giving back to my community and help create more equitable communities for the people and families I serve."
Elizabeth Lopez
A first-year MSW student at San Jose State University, Elizabeth sees higher education as a pathway to better support individuals and communities. She was drawn to Pivotal by the strong sense of belonging and community that scholars experience through our programs.
During her internship, Elizabeth is eager to expand her knowledge of policies, scholarships, and resources that can help scholars succeed both academically and professionally.
"The thing that excites me most about social work is the opportunity to connect scholars with resources to benefit them academically and future career needs. I am also excited to work through navigating challenges and becoming part of our scholars' support system to overcome these obstacles."
Flor Gomez
For Flor, joining Pivotal's coaching team is a full-circle moment. A Pivotal alum and recent San Jose State University graduate, Flor is now returning to SJSU to pursue her MSW while supporting the next generation of scholars.
Having personally experienced the power of encouragement, opportunity, and community that Pivotal provides, she hopes she can give that same support to the next generation of Pivotal scholars as they pursue their educational and career goals.
"The impact I hope to make is helping young adults feel believed in, supported, and capable of reaching their goals."
Kimberly Castillo
Kimberly is a first-year MSW student at San Francisco State University who was inspired to pursue social work after witnessing the impact social workers and counselors have within their communities. As a first-generation college student, she understands many of the challenges that can come with navigating higher education.
She joined Pivotal because of our commitment to supporting scholars and is excited to serve as a coach, celebrate scholars' accomplishments, and help students build confidence in their educational journeys.
“I hope to motivate scholars to follow their dreams and reach their goals.”
Cesar Moreno Perez
Currently in his second year of the MSW program at San Francisco State University, Cesar was drawn to social work because it allows him to make a meaningful difference in individuals' lives while also addressing the larger systems that shape their experiences.
He is looking forward to working with Pivotal’s foster youth scholars, learning from experienced professionals, and developing the skills that will shape the kind of social worker he hopes to become.
"The impact we make may not change the whole world, but making a difference in one person's life can mean everything to that person."
Nikki Anthony-Edwards
A second-year student in the extended MSW program at California State University, East Bay, Nikki's path to social work is deeply personal. Growing up alongside family members affected by the foster care system, she witnessed firsthand the challenges, frustrations, and trauma they experienced. Those experiences continue to motivate her work today.
Pivotal's mission immediately resonated with Nikki, who is eager to learn how meaningful support and advocacy can create lasting change for foster youth and young adults.
"What excites me most about social work is being a voice for the voiceless, standing beside those let down by the systems meant to protect them. I've watched loved ones carry that unwarranted weight. I want to see people beyond their case file, and fight for the future they deserve."
Norma Rodriguez
A first-year MSW student at San Francisco State University, Norma's passion for advocacy and helping others stems from her own lived experiences and her desire to support young people as they pursue their goals.
She was drawn to Pivotal's strong community presence and is especially excited to develop the skills to become a trusted source of support for post-secondary scholars.
"I hope to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people by cultivating spaces that provide support, compassion, and understanding."
Investing in the Next Generation
Through coaching, encouragement, resource navigation, and relationship-building, these interns will help Pivotal scholars overcome obstacles and achieve their educational goals. At the same time, they'll gain invaluable firsthand experience supporting young people as they build futures filled with possibility.
We're excited to welcome all of our MSW interns to the Pivotal community and look forward to the impact they will make throughout the year.
