The Art of Ambition: Jaya's Growth with Pivotal Support
Overcoming Challenges and Shaping Her Future

Jaya’s Pivotal journey began when she started high school. Seeking support to navigate her way through high school and prepare for college, she learned about Pivotal from her foster mom and joined the program in her freshman year.
“I’m lucky in that I have had a lot of support from my foster mom and others in my support circle. But it’s great to have my Pivotal Coach, Daisy, who can specifically help me with academics.”
Daisy has been working with her since her sophomore year, initially helping her navigate the high school experience and passing her classes.
“Growing up, I was really shy and over time, Daisy encouraged me to try new things, and I’ve come a long way in opening up more and learning about new opportunities,” says Jaya. “I’m very proud of how far I’ve come, in spite of the challenges I’ve faced in the past.”
From a very young age, Jaya found a way to express herself through art. She began taking classes, learning realistic drawing and painting skills, as well as clay sculpture, learning about different styles and techniques and how to make each medium work for her.
“I’m proud of how much I’ve progressed – from a really cartoonish style to more realistic drawings,” she says. “I love being able to think about a drawing I want to do and then picking the medium that I think will best help me convey what I’m trying to say with my drawing.”
As graduation approaches, Jaya and Daisy have been looking to her future. She hopes to use her art skills in her future career, perhaps as an art therapist for foster children, so she and Daisy are researching schools and programs that would be a good fit.
“Daisy helped me through a lot of difficult processes - college applications, financial aid and scholarships, just helping me keep on track with my plans. I’m so grateful for her support and advice, both in school and for life in general.”
She hopes to attend a college or university and has her eye on UC Santa Cruz. All her hard work and determination has paid off and she has several options to choose from.
“Jaya got accepted into every school she applied to!” says Daisy, Jaya’s Pivotal Coach. “I’m so proud of her. It’s been a pleasure to work with Jaya – her determination truly shows, and I have no doubt that she’ll continue to thrive in college and beyond.”
“I’m excited to start my life as a young adult, but I’m also a little nervous,” says Jaya. “I want to make the most out of my life and having the support and encouragement of my Pivotal coach helps me stay on track and focus on my goals and passions.”
