Individualized, trauma-responsive, youth-focused coaching is the heart of Pivotal’s work. Our coaches walk beside scholars through the uncertainty, challenges, growth, and victories that shape their journeys to success. Most critically, coaching is about helping each scholar define what success means for them and building a path to reach it.

Pivotal coaches recognize that success doesn’t follow a single timeline or path, especially for young people in and from foster care. Above all else, coaches listen. They meet scholars where they are and learn about their goals, fears, strengths, and challenges. They work to identify what may be holding scholars back and help them build a sustainable plan for their future.

For some scholars, that relationship begins as early as middle school. Starting in 8th grade, Pivotal coaches provide one‑on‑one academic and career coaching, offering consistent support to students who often experience school changes, instability, or disrupted support systems. However, scholars can access Pivotal’s support at any point in their academic journey.

In high school, coaches help scholars define what graduation means to them and how they can break that goal into achievable steps. Together, they focus on building essential Success Skills such as self‑awareness, communication and self‑advocacy, organization, and accessing resources. These skills are proven predictors of long‑term academic and employment success. They also begin career exploration, helping each scholar determine what career options are available to them and what they see themselves pursuing in the future.

Coaches check in regularly, celebrate progress, help troubleshoot setbacks, and collaborate with caregivers, social workers, teachers, and other adults in a scholar’s life to ensure they are all working toward a common goal for the student. For many scholars, a Pivotal coach is the first adult who they can rely on for consistent, ongoing support, even after they exit the foster care system.

Pivotal’s coaching doesn’t end with a high school diploma. After graduation, scholars transition to work with post-secondary coaches as they enroll in college or certification programs, navigate financial aid, and adjust to the demands of post‑secondary education. Post-secondary coaches become a steady presence at a time when students might feel overwhelmed or alone as they manage challenges like course selection, housing instability, transportation, or balancing school with work and family responsibilities.

At this stage, coaching becomes both practical and future‑focused. Coaches support scholars in setting new goals, finding resources, revisiting Success Skills, and building confidence as independent learners and self‑advocates. Pivotal scholarships and financial aid guidance help relieve financial stress so scholars can stay focused on completing their degrees with minimal debt.

Pivotal coaches help scholars look into their future, to their first job and beyond to long‑term stability and self‑sufficiency. Through Pivotal’s Professional Development & Career Readiness program, coaches support resume building, interview preparation, career exploration, and connections to internships and employment opportunities. Scholars practice professional skills, build networks, and gain exposure to careers that they may never have considered before.

The critical component to this work is its individualized nature. There is no single definition of success or standard path for a student to take. Rather, coaches help scholars articulate their own vision for adulthood and develop the skills and strategies needed to achieve this vision. They help scholars identify barriers early and connect them to academic, financial, and mental health resources, ensuring that those challenges don’t derail their long‑term goals. And, critically, they celebrate each milestone with scholars, helping them appreciate the progress they’ve made while keeping their eyes on the long-term goal.

This is what makes Pivotal’s coaching model so powerful. It’s not short‑term support or a checklist of things to do. It’s relationship‑driven, trauma‑responsive, and grounded in the belief that every scholar deserves someone who will walk with them until they’re ready to walk on their own.
